A house with no heat in February is not a scheduling problem, it is a burst-pipe risk. No-heat calls go to the front of the queue ahead of everything else on the board, and the arrival window for your area is quoted before you commit rather than after.

Heating faults split cleanly into three families — combustion, air movement, and controls — and they are diagnosed differently. A furnace that ignites and then shuts down after ninety seconds is telling you something specific, and it is not the same thing as one that never ignites at all.

What it is doing

Find the symptom. We will find the fault.

No heat at all

Check the obvious first: thermostat batteries, the furnace switch on the wall beside it that looks like a light switch, and the breaker. Past that it is an ignition fault, a failed inducer or pressure switch, a tripped limit, or a gas supply issue. All of them are diagnosable in one visit.

The furnace starts, runs briefly, then shuts down

Short cycling on a call for heat usually means the system is tripping its own safety. A dirty flame sensor is the most common single cause and one of the cheapest to fix. A blocked flue, a failing pressure switch, or a high-limit trip from restricted airflow all present the same way from the hallway, which is why it gets tested rather than guessed.

The furnace is blowing cold air

If the blower runs but the air is cold, the burners are not staying lit or the system is in a post-shutdown cool-down. On a heat pump, cold air during a defrost cycle is normal and brief; cold air continuously is not, and usually means the system has lost charge or the reversing valve is not shifting.

The heat pump runs constantly but the house stays cold

Heat pumps lose capacity as the outdoor temperature drops and lean on auxiliary heat strips to make up the difference. A system running on aux heat far more than it should shows up first on the electric bill. It is worth diagnosing early — the fault is often a defrost control or a charge problem, and running on resistance heat all winter is the expensive way to find out.

There is a smell when the heat comes on

A dusty smell on the first burn of the season is normal and passes within an hour. A sharp chemical or burning-plastic smell is not, and a smell of gas means leave the house and call the gas utility before calling anyone else.

Carbon monoxide and heat exchanger testing on every visit

A cracked heat exchanger vents combustion products into the air the house breathes, and it is not visible from the front of the furnace. Every heating visit includes combustion and CO testing as standard rather than as an upsell, because it is the one furnace fault where the consequence of missing it is not a cold house.

Every heating system in the footprint

Housing stock across Frederick County, Montgomery County and Fairfax County spans about a century of construction, and the heating equipment reflects it.

  • Gas furnaces, including high-efficiency condensing units
  • Electric furnaces and resistance heat
  • Heat pumps, including dual-fuel and defrost control faults
  • Boilers and hydronic systems in older properties
  • Propane systems where natural gas is not on the street

Replacement quoted honestly, including when the answer is no

A furnace with a confirmed cracked heat exchanger needs replacing and there is no arguing with it. A twelve-year-old unit with a failed inducer motor usually does not. Swift Tech gives the repair number and the replacement number together and says which one it would choose in your position — and will tell you when a repair beats a new system, which is the opposite of what a commissioned salesperson is paid to say.

Asked and answered

Heating & Furnace Repair — questions we get asked

Short answers. If yours is not here, call and ask — the phone is answered by someone who does this work.

I have no heat. How fast can you get here?
No-heat calls are prioritized ahead of all other work. Swift Tech quotes a guaranteed arrival window for your specific area before you book — 30 to 60 minutes in Frederick, Maryland, and up to 90 to 120 minutes at the outer edge of the service area in Herndon, Virginia.
Do you repair heat pumps as well as furnaces?
Yes. Swift Tech repairs heat pumps, gas furnaces, electric furnaces, boilers and dual-fuel systems across Maryland and Virginia.
How do I know if my heat exchanger is cracked?
You cannot tell by looking. It requires combustion and carbon monoxide testing, which Swift Tech performs on every heating visit as standard. A cracked heat exchanger is the one furnace fault that is a safety issue rather than a comfort issue, and it means the furnace needs replacing.
Why is my furnace turning on and off every few minutes?
Short cycling usually means the furnace is tripping its own safety switch. A dirty flame sensor is the most common and least expensive cause. A blocked flue, a failing pressure switch or restricted airflow tripping the high limit all look identical from the hallway and need testing to separate.
Is it worth repairing an old furnace?
It depends on the specific fault, not the age alone. Swift Tech quotes the repair and the replacement side by side so the comparison is visible, and recommends the repair when the repair is the better value.
