Plumbing is the trade where waiting is most expensive. A slow drip under a vanity is a washer; the same drip left for a month is a cabinet floor, and left for a season it is a subfloor and a mould remediation quote. Water does not stay where it started, and by the time it is visible on a ceiling it has usually been travelling along a joist for a while.
The $69 covers finding the actual source rather than the symptom. Where the water shows up and where it is coming from are frequently different places, and the difference matters — cutting drywall in the wrong spot is its own expense. You get the finding, the repair price in writing, and the decision. Approve it and the $69 comes off the bill.
What it is doing
This is the call to make immediately rather than at the weekend. The three usual sources are a failed wax ring under the toilet, a leaking shower pan or tile grout letting water past, and a supply or drain joint inside the floor. They present almost identically from below, which is exactly why the diagnosis matters — a wax ring is inexpensive, a failed shower pan is not, and guessing wrong means opening the wrong ceiling.
A single slow fixture is usually a local blockage in that trap or branch. Several fixtures slow at once, or a toilet that bubbles when the washing machine drains, points at the main line instead — often roots at a joint on older properties, or a bellied section of pipe holding water. The two need completely different equipment, so it is worth saying on the phone which fixtures are affected.
On a gas tank the usual suspects are the thermocouple, the gas control valve or a pilot that will not stay lit. On electric it is typically one of the two heating elements or a thermostat — and a tank that produces some hot water but runs out fast is the classic signature of a failed upper or lower element. Sediment build-up shortens the run time on both, which is what flushing is meant to prevent.
If it dropped everywhere at once, look at the pressure-reducing valve or the main supply. If it is one fixture, it is almost always an aerator or cartridge full of scale. If it dropped gradually over years in an older house, galvanised supply piping corroding closed from the inside is a real possibility, and that is a repiping conversation rather than a repair.
A pump that never stops usually has a stuck float, a failed check valve letting the pit refill, or a discharge line that is frozen or blocked. A pump that does nothing during heavy rain is the one that floods a basement — and the time to find that out is not during the storm.
Finding the source before opening anything is most of the work, and it is where a flat diagnostic earns its keep.
